COAST OF SOMALIA April 18, 2009 : Canadian Navy



The Naval Boarding Party returns to Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Winnipeg after they launched a rigid hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) to investigate a skiff loaded with people in the Gulf of Aden. After confirming that the individuals onboard were not in distress, the Naval Boarding Party provided humanitarian assistance in the form of water and fruits.



Leading Seaman Amy Backstad, Coxswain of the rigid hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) returns the Naval Boarding Party to Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Winnipeg after investigating a skiff loaded with people in the Gulf of Aden. The vessels were later released following a thorough search.

Winnipeg was forced to aggressively pursue and fire multiple warning shots, eventually stopping and searching the pirate skiff.
